USE OF STANFORD SYSTEM FROM THE NETWORK
1. WE DON'T EXPECT HEAVY OUTSIDE USE OF THIS SYSTEM,
BECAUSE IT IS ONE OF THE MOST HEAVILY USED SYSTEMS
ALREADY. HERE ARE SOME FACILITIES.
2. USER FILE AREAS ARE DESIGNATED BY PROJECT AND
PROGRAMMER NUMBERS. THUS THIS AREA IS NET,GUE WHERE
GUE STANDS FOR GUEST IF YOU HAVEN'T GUESSED.
3. THE LOGIN COMMAND IS L <PROJECT>,<PROGRAMMER>.
4. THE LOGOUT COMMAND IS K.
5. ALL SYSTEM COMMANDS ARE ACTIVATED BY <CARRIAGE
RETURN> <LINE FEED>. HOWEVER, CONTRARY TO NET
POLICY, OUR SYSTEM WILL ECHO A LINE FEED AFTER EVERY
CARRIAGE RETURN YOU TYPE (EXCEPT WHEN YOU ARE IN A
TALK RING, OR AFTER YOU ISSUE THE CORRECT UUO OR
TTY-CHARACTER TO CHANGE ECHO), THUS YOU ONLY NEED TO
TYPE THE CARRIAGE RETURN.
6. EXTENSIVE USE OF THE SYSTEM SHOULD BE OK'D BY
LESTER EARNEST
ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE PROJECT
COMPUTER SCIENCE DEPARTMENT
STANFORD, CALIFORNIA 94305

7. TO SEND A MESSAGE TO A STANFORD USER THAT HE WILL
GET THE NEXT TIME HE LOGS IN, USE THE COMMAND
MAIL <PROGRAMMER>
AND FOLLOW THE SUBSEQUENT INSTRUCTIONS. MCCARTHY IS
JMC, AND EARNEST IS LES, REPORT REQUESTS SHOULD BE
DIRECTED TO PAW (PATTE WOOD). TROUBLE REPORTS SHOULD
BE DIRECTED TO REG (RALPH GORIN).
8. HELP <COMMAND> MAY GET YOU INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO
USE A FEW COMMON COMMANDS AND PROGRAMS, BUT THE HELP
SYSTEM IS NOT IN GOOD SHAPE.
9. TO GET BACK TO THE SYSTEM FROM A PROGRAM USE
<CONTROL C>. <CONTROL O> HALTS TYPE OUT, AND THE TYPE
OUT CAN BE SUBSEQUENTLY RESUMED BY ANOTHER <CONTROL
O>.
10. FILES ARE DESIGNATED BY
<NAME1>(.<NAME2>)([<PROJECT>,<PROGRAMMER>]). THUS,
THIS FILE IS SYSTEM.USE[NET,GUE]. THE [...,...] CAN
BE OMITTED IF THE USER IS LOGGED IN UNDER THAT
<PROJ,PROG>.
11. TYPE <FILE> WILL DO JUST THAT.
12. WE HAVE AN IMPLEMENTATION OF THE FILE TRANSFER
PROTOCOL WHICH MAY WORK.
13. DIR WILL LIST A DIRECTORY. DIR [PRJ,PRG] WILL LIST
A PARTICULAR USER'S DIRECTORY. DIR [S,DOC] AND DIR
[UP,DOC] WILL LIST THE NAMES OF SOME OF OUR
DOCUMENTATION FILES.
14. WE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHO IS USING OUR SYSTEM AND
FOR WHAT. TO THIS END, PLEASE KEEP US INFORMED BY
TYPING
MAIL HOS
THE FIRST TIME YOU USE THE SYSTEM AND WHEN THE NATURE
OF YOUR USE CHANGES.
15. THERE IS NO COMPUTER OPERATOR. 'TALK CTY' WILL
LET YOU TYPE ON THE CONSOLE. WHAT WE THINK ABOUT
