CāŠ—;
METAFONT (MF) is a font-making compiler developed by D. E. Knuth here at the
lab. The standard version is obtainable by typing "r mf" to the monitor. It
produces ".tfm" files suitable for use with the new TeX, and ".gf" files
suitable for use with DVIDD and the various printing devices we have.

The new version of MF is explained in The METAFONTbook. An old
prototype version was described in the book TeX and METAFONT, but
it has little in common with the new system except its name.

To run the old MF, say "r mf79". To run the really old version, which
produces ".tfx" files suitable for use with XGPTEX, say "r xgpmf".

A list of all known errors in the old user manual appears in file
ERRATA.TXT[MF,SYS].
