Professor C.D. Mote, Jr. February 27, 1990
Chairman, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering
University of California
Berkeley, CA 94720
Dear Professor Mote:
I am responding to your letter of February 7, 1990 regarding Dr.
Daniel Koditschek's application for your advertised position in the
area of controls.
I have know Dr. Koditschek for several years in connection with our
mutual interest in the computer control of multi-degree-of-freedom
mechanical systems. I have heard him lecture at several conferences
and at two invited seminars at Stanford. In addition I have read
several of his papers. I believe I have a fairly good understanding
of his abilities and general stature as a researcher.
Koditschek is widely know and respected for his work in the control of
nonlinear robotic system. He is obviously very bright, and has done
outstanding work. I would rate him as one of the smartest in his peer
group, and I expect him to continue to grow and be a productive
researcher.
He is a good lecturer and has an outgoing personality. I would expect
he is an excellent and popular teacher. I would also expect that he
would take a strong role in departmental and professional activities.
From everything I know about him, I recommend that you give his
application serious attention.
Sincerely,
Bernard Roth
