CS 206 COMPUTING WITH SYMBOLIC EXPRESSIONS FALL 1974

		    ORGANIZATION OF THE COURSE

This course consists of lectures, homework, a midterm
examination, a final examination, and a term project. The homework
will include use of a CAI (Computer Aided Instruction) system for
teaching Lisp on the IMSSS PDP-10. The midterm will occur on
November 5 and there will be a final examination. Projects will be
due on the day of the final examination. It is possible to get a
grade of B+ or Pass in the course without doing a project, and the
grade of INC will be given only under exceptional circumstances.
Therefore, those who aspire to some flavor of A should start their
projects early.

I am usually to be found in the afternoon at the Artificial
Intelligence Project, (on Arastradero Road between Page Mill and
Alpine Roads), extension 4430 or 4971, and will normally be
available for brief consultation after class. Home telephone
321-7580.

The teaching assistant is Nick Littlestone. His office hours
are after class until 3:00 in Ventura 11, on both Tuesdays and
Thursdays, starting next week. His home phone is 328-9694.

The text for the course will be the LISP 1.6 Programmer's
manual and the UCI Lisp manual, both of which are necessary
documentation for UCI Lisp, as well as the Course Notes, the CAI
text, and other documents to be announced. The Lisp manuals can be
purchased for $3.75 and $4.80 from the Stanford book store. A charge
of $2.00 will be made for the course notes and the CAI text. The
full charge of $2.00 will be collected when the first section of
course notes is obtained from room 251 in Polya. The rest of the
course notes, and all other handouts will be distributed in class,
and will also be available in Ventura 11. The first section of
course notes will not be available until next Tuesday after class.

The computer terminals which you will use are located in
Casita, a small building attached to the back of Ventura hall (see
map below for location).
