There are several kinds of text editors available here.
E is the display editor in current favor.
TV is an earlier display editor from which E was developed
SOS is teletype oriented. If you will be using the display
facilities at the lab, learn E.
TV is described in TVED.DCS[UP,DOC]
The differences between TV and E are discribed
in TV2E.FW[UP,DOC]
To learn E, use the monitor command:
R E;TEACHâTEACH[UP,DOC]/2P
SOS is described in SOS.LES[S,DOC], and briefly below:
SUPPOSE YOU WANT TO CREATE A FILE (A PROGRAM OR A
WRITEUP OR WHATEVER). THIS IS HOW YOU DO IT: HIT CALL, THEN
TYPE "CREATE FFFFFF.EEE" WHERE FFFFFF.EEE IS THE NAME YOU WANT
THE FILE TO BE CALLED. WHEN YOU SEE THE NUMBER 00100, YOU MAY
START TYPING WHATEVER IS TO GO IN THAT FILE. WHEN YOU HAVE
BEEN TYPING FOR A FEW MINUTES AND WANT TO BE SURE YOU DON'T
LOSE WHAT HAS BEEN TYPED, OR YOU ARE FINISHED AND WANT TO SAVE
WHAT YOU HAVE, THEN TYPE (CARRIAGE-RETURN) FOLLOWED BY
(ALTMODE), THEN TYPE ONE OF THE COMMANDS BELOW:
SUPPOSE YOU HAVE A TEXT FILE, AND YOU WANT TO CHANGE
SOMETHING. THIS IS HOW YOU DO IT: HIT CALL AND TYPE "ED
FFFFFF.EEE". WHEN YOU SEE AN ASTERISK AT THE LEFT OF THE
LINE THEN YOU MAY TYPE AN EDITOR COMMAND.
THE BASIC COMMANDS TO GET STARTED ARE:
P<CARRIAGE RETURN>= TYPE THE NEXT 15 LINES,
I.<CARRIAGE RETURN>=INSERT A NEW LINE AFTER THIS LINE,
D.<CARRIAGE RETURN>=DELETE THIS LINE,
W<CARRIAGE RETURN>=SAVE THE WORLD (REALLY MAKE ALL THE
CHANGES SO FAR INDICATED SO THAT IF THE COMPUTER SYSTEM
CRASHES THEN AT LEAST WHAT'S DONE SO FAR WON'T BE LOST).
THE REST OF THE COMMANDS CAN BE FOUND IN THE SOS
MANUAL (WHICH IS BOUND WITH THE OTHER MANUALS)
