\J\F0Dear Dave,

This letter is in part an apology for the rather long time it has taken
to get the enclosed tape to you. Our only excuse is that we have all
been extremely busy with other work, and no one has had time (until now)
to make a few necessary edits to correct a couple "bad" known bugs in the
export files. Also, the Stanford files are again in a state of flux, so
I was a bit reluctant to send you \F1those\F0, at least until things
settled down.

In any event, the enclosed tape contains essentially two SAIL systems:
(1) the standard [X,AIL] export system, and (2) the current [S,AIL]
source files. The [X,AIL] files should run pretty well (I fixed the
only serious bug discovered since the last release). The [S,AIL]
files are more up to date, and contain a few more fairly obscure bug
fixes, as well as a couple new features. These include a general
string output routine ($PRINT), and a number of facilities for
record structures (which are \F1not\F0 yet intended for export
users -- The code is under an assembly switch so you shouldn't
lose badly if you use the newer files).

The files were written on the tape (7 track) without any header records
or other embellishments by our program COPY, using the commands:
\.

COPY MTA1:←@FILES	;The usual export system
COPY MTA1:←@FILES2	;The extra files for [S,AIL]

\JSince the first names mentioned in FILES and FILES2, respectively,
are those very files, you shouldn't have too much trouble finding what
you need on the tape. The file TELLEM contains a complete set of
operating instructions for putting up a SAIL system.

Re the earlier tape which you don't seem to have gotten: As near as I can tell,
it actually was mailed to you. Deep mystery.\.
